Mulch Delivery in Connecticut

Connecticut Landscape Mulch

Mulching is one of the most important ways to maintain healthy landscape plants. A mulch is any material applied to the soil surface for protection or improvement of the area covered. Mulching is really nature’s idea. Nature produces large quantities of mulch all the time with fallen leaves, needles, twigs, pieces of bark, spent flower blossoms, fallen fruit and other organic material.

At Birch Mountain Earthworks, LLC in South Windsor, Connecticut, we carry a variety of Mulches to suit your landscape project, and your individual preference. Stop in or call us today to see our available options.

Mulch Delivery in CT

There are various types of mulch available. The two main categories of mulch sold and delivered in CT are natural mulch and dyed mulch. Natural mulch is a pure wood ground product that does not have any color enhancement. The premium natural mulch is produced from the bark of the tree rather than the woody part. As a result organically, it is better for the soil as it decomposes and it gives a natural protectant to insects as well as reduces the risk of artillery fungus.

Color enhanced mulches (Brown, Black, and Red)

We carry color enhanced mulch in the colors of Brown, Black and Red. The mulch that is color enhanced here in CT will hold its color the longest out of the mulches you can select from.

Forest Blend

This mulch is an all-natural mulch that is dark in color. It is a very popular choice due to its rich dark color but also for its price point. The blend has both woody tree and bark blended together.

Premium Pine/ Hemlock Blend

The blend of these barks is our favorite mulch. An all-natural mulch with a beautiful color that is a great mulch to use for landscape beds. Typically this is the mulch we use in our display landscape beds.

Hemlock Mulch

Hemlock mulch is also a very popular mulch. At the upper end of the spectrum in cost it is a beautiful mulch to use in landscape beds.

Playscape Mulch

The playscape mulch is a natural color. It is certified mulch for use in playscape for your own yard or day care center.

Cedar Mulch

A natural cedar mulch is available in “natural”, black and red. Cedar mulch has many structural benefits with cutting down on artillery fungus as well as insect repellant.

Wood Chips

Wood chips are a product as a result of wood chipping. The wood chips are great for soil stabilization as well as an inexpensive alternative to cover large areas. Although they can be used in landscape beds, typically we’d recommend our other mulch products for that purpose.

Are there other types of mulch? Why are there other names?

Although we have covered the many types of mulch there may be names of mulch that are different. We find the reason for that is simply marketing. If someone for example requested “pine mulch” they would typically referring to the brown color enhanced mulch. In any event, if you do not see a mulch listed, that doesn’t necessarily mean we don’t have it or can’t get it. It could simply be the name one organization uses vs. another. Please call or email us your phone number and we will be glad to help!

DELIVERY

For local delivery of mulch in CT we can bring up to 25 yards of mulch per trip for your landscape or garden project. Typically delivery can be arranged for the same or next day delivery. During busy times, the wait time may be longer but we do our best to get everyone their mulch as soon as possible.

Please keep in mind for the delivery of the mulch we do need a relatively flat open space. It is also important that there are no overhead wires or branches so that the dump body can be raised safely to deliver the mulch to your jobsite.

Pick-up

For those who have their own truck and or trailer pick up is available. The smallest bucket we have is a ½ yard bucket. Please know the ability of your vehicle so that is not overloaded. We always suggest calling ahead before stopping in. Our drivers also are the loader operators. There are busy times where the loader operators are doing deliveries and may not be available to load pick up customers.

How much mulch do I need and how do I figure out what I should be putting down?

It can be very easy to figure out how much mulch to get. Simply measure the areas you are planning to mulch and use our MATERIALS CALCULATOR to help calculate what you need.

Depth of mulch

For new landscapes an initial application of four to five inches is appropriate. You will find that the mulch will compact after about a month or so and if you don’t put down this initial amount you may end up with some bare spots as a result.

For existing landscapes we typically recommend a fresh mulching each spring. Prior to putting in the new mulch it is worthwhile to scrape off some excess mulch first. Another critical element of proper re-mulching is proper edging. The borders of the beds where it may meet up to walks, patios, sidewalks, driveways and landscape edging need to be cleaned out like they were at the point the landscape was new. If this step is missed, typically weeds will grow on the edges where the new mulch is not thick. Proper edging of excavating out the old materials will also prevent the new mulch from spilling out of your landscape beds.

Do you need help installing the mulch?

If you find yourself in need of help installing the mulch as well as prepping the beds we can help! For large scale projects that may also involve landscape renovation and the many other services we provide we can help. For projects that are smaller than we typically do, we do have a great network of contractors that we can refer you to based on your location and size and scope of mulching.
